Portland, ME: We arrived at the Portland Expo Saturday morning at 7:30am. I had my camera, my bleacher chair, a couple of snacks and was ready to watch the activities. The girls events started promptly at 8am with the hurdles and 40yd dash prelims. After that, the infield was cleared and High Jump and Junior Shot Put events took it over, with some long distance races being run on the track. Around 11am, the official opening ceremony was performed. The meet director gave an overview which included a history of track at the Expo. 1924 was the first year a track meet was held at the Expo. 1928 was the first year the Southwestern Maine Track Meet was held at the Expo. The tracks that are used in the Expo have been in use since 1959. A plea was put out for volunteers to form two committees. One to research, design and recommend new track fixtures for the Expo. The second committee to be formed will be to fund raise to financially support committee one’s work. After that, the National Anthem was sung by a young lady from Westbrook. She was offered to take Christine Aguilera’s position in the future.Read
