Monday October 4th. That was the day that everyone was looking forward to. Why? Because at 7 oclock we were schedule to play Scarborough on their home turf. Going into the game, Scarborough had an incredible 9-0 record and even more incredible, they hadn't let up one goal to anybody all season. Most teams would go into the game thinking that they have no chance and that Scarborough would dominate them. We didn't let any of the stats get into our heads though. We went into the game with the same mindset as every other game: play the way we know how to play and the results will speak for themselves. We recently changed our formation to a 4-4-2 and it was our second game trying it out. Scarborough always has a strong midfield so we hoped the extra midfielder would help us slow down their attack. At the start of the game, both teams looked like they were getting off to a slow start. After about 15 minutes, we realized our goal scoring chances were going to be limited, so we would have to make the most of our oppurtunities. We were willing to sacrifice our attacking chances if that meant we would stop them from scoring. The first half went on with Scarborough having the majority of the shots, but our goalkeeper Amber Verrill made save after save, looking like a professional. Our defense kept their composure and didn't let the crossing balls from the midfield rattle them at all. We managed to make it to halftime without letting up any goals, a pretty solid accomplishment against such a dangerous team. Coach told us to be smart on defense, we were trying to protect our goal more than try to score goals on them. The second half went on just as the first half did, Scarborough began to get frustrated with their shots going off the crossbar and not being able to get anything past Amber. She made diving saves like it was her job and tipped three close shots over the crossbar to keep the game tied at 0-0. Everyone agreed that Amber played the best game we've all seen her play in a long time, and at the end of regulation we were still tied at 0-0. At that point, it didn't even matter to us who won or lost the game. Before overtime the bench was filled with smiles and high fives because we knew that we'd played Scarborough closer than any other team has this season. OVertime began and after 47 seconds they scored on a high far post shot that Amber had no chance at saving. But the score didn't even matter. No one was sad, upset, or displeased with the result. We were actually really proud of the way we played because we were the underdogs and everyone was expecting us to get crushed. The scoreboard doesn't show how awesome we felt after that game.
