Nick Snow is the reigning 100M
State Champion in the 9/10 year
old division and one of the top
5th grade basketball players in
the State. |
ORDER COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE
Every so
often that special player comes along
that has pure athleticism and the
passion for a game that drives them to
become the best.
Anyone
that has seen Nick Snow play basketball
can attest to the fact that Nick is one
of those special players that changes
any game the moment he steps on the
court.
Opposing
coaches regularly call time outs when
Nick walks back on the court to try to
control the damage he is about to do to
them. It is fun to watch the coaches
experiment how to defend him.
They try
to play him tight and he takes it to the
rim or dishes off to a wide open
teammate. They make the adjustment to
have the defender play off him a little
and he pulls up and drains one from
outside.
One of
Nick's greatest attributes is his
unselfishness. Nick isn't concerned
about being the high scorer or being the
"star" of his team. He is always looking
for an open teammate to pass to. The
latest example of this happened in his
5th grade travel team's game against
Scarborough2 on Sunday January 27, 2008.
Nick was headed to the hoop on a
breakaway and as he got to the paint, he
passed the ball to a teammate under the
hoop. When asked later why he didn't
make the lay-up himself he answered, "I
wanted (him) to score his first points
of the season."
A few
minutes later they were on another fast
break, Derek Hammond passed to Nick, who
in one motion redirected the ball to
Kevin Weisser under the hoop who then
hit the lay-up. A big time play that had
half of the spectators in the middle
school gym on their feet.
Nick has
been playing up in age in AAU basketball
with great success for the past few
seasons. He will play for
MBNATION 11U this spring which will
be their top 11U team for Maine Hoops,
the top basketball club in Maine.
Quite
possibly what makes Nick such so special
isn't his lightning speed, or his insane
skills on the basketball court. It is
his kindness to others. He is a quiet,
unassuming kid who is humble about his
abilities and accomplishments.
My son
Ethan (3rd grader) has been a recipient
of his kindness on many occasions where
Nick has included him in different pick
up games with other fifth graders, and
on other occasions has helped Ethan with
dribbling and shooting skills on the
court.
As a fan
of youth sports I feel privileged to
have had the opportunity to watch Nick
play and get to know him. I am also very
pleased that Ethan looks up to him and
wants to be like Nick on and off the
court, he really couldn't have chosen a
better older player to want to emulate.
Any
basketball fan who hasn't had the
opportunity to watch Nick play should
try to make it to the last game of the
regular season on Sunday February 3,
2008 at 1PM at the Windham Middle
School.
Nick isn't
the only talented player on this 5th
grade travel team either, they are very
deep and are poised to finish their
season with only one loss, and have to
be one of the favorites to go all the
way in the upcoming tournament.

I am his
fifth grade teacher and he is an
enthusiastic student and a great role
model in the classroom. He is one of the
kids you wish you had 20 more in your
room , just like him. Congratulations on
this great accomplishment and keep up
the excellent effort.
