Windham, ME: Tim Blackie was recognized at the Windham High School varsity boys basketball game on Saturday January 14th for more than two decades of service to Windham Youth Basketball. Tim was presented with a plaque and his wife Cindy was presented with flowers.

If you played basketball while growing up in Windham in the last 20 years chances are Blackie had a hand in your development.

When he started out basketball was run through the Town of Windham's Parks and Recreation Department. It was later turned over to WHS varsity boys basketball coach Kevin Millington. Then about ten years ago, Mark Robinson who was the Director of Parks and Recreation at the time, suggested forming a youth Basketball Association similar to other programs like Little League and Soccer.

Blackie, along with Mike Weisser, Terry McKay, Mike Hodge, and Peter Godfrey formed Windham Youth Basketball Association (WYBA). WYBA now offers basketball programs for students in grades K-8. Blackie has been one of the main faces for WYBA over the years. He ran the K-3 program in the Windham High School gym on Saturday mornings in addition to coaching the sixth grade boys basketball team as well as many more behind the scenes responsibilities.

With his own children long gone from youth basketball Blackie is starting to step back from fulltime participation. He said, "I am probably not fully retiring but I am stepping back." He added, "My main concern as I step back is the need for more parents to get involved in WYBA and volunteer to ensure the program keeps going in the future."

When asked to reflect on his time with Windham Youth Basketball, Blackie said the biggest thing he learned was, "patience" and the thing he enjoyed the most was, "Watching the kids improve from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. It happens every year."

Blackie was recognized again during Windham night at the Sunday January 15th Maine Red Claws game.
