Windham, ME: Meghan Gribbin scored 36 points to lead Windham (6-3) past Gorham (4-5) 59-47 in Windham on Tuesday night. Diandra Berthiaume and Steph Frost added eight points each to help Windham avenge last year's playoff loss to Gorham. Gribbin began the night needing 21 points to reach 1,000 points in her career and reached the milestone early in the third quarter.

Diandra Berthiaume got the Eagles scoring started giving Windham a 2-0 lead. Gorham responded with three points before Lonnie Staten scored to put Windham back in front 4-3. After a Gorham basket Gribbin got into the scoring column by scoring two straight baskets to put Windham ahead 8-5. Gorham answered with a three-pointer before Berthiaume converted one of two free throws to put Windham ahead for good. Gribbin followed with a free throw and Windham lead 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Windham took over in the second quarter outscoring Gorham 21-5 to take a commanding 31-13 halftime lead. Gribbin scored Windham's first 11 points of the quarter and went on to score 15 points giving her 20 first half points, leaving her one shy of the 1,000 point mark at halftime. Steph Frost added four points and Haley Bachelder two points for the Eagles. The packed Windham stands erupted in cheers when the buzzer sounded at the end of the second quarter, anticipating that Gribbin's next basket would put her past the coveted milestone.

Coach Cummings talked about Gribbin's recent scoring numbers, "Meghan, the last two games has been playing different than she has in the past. She has always been a scorer but really the last two games i think she has had a little extra fire in the belly, looking for her offense a little more. She still had five assists and was able to create for other people. Gorham knocked us out of the playoffs last year so I think it was a little revenge for her. She was looking to score and we need her to do that the rest of the season, 1,000 points aside we need her to score the rest of the way."

It was clear during the second quarter that Gribbin's teammates were as intent on her scoring her 1,000th point in this game as Gribbin was. Her teammates were setting screens and looking for her on passes. Unfortunately for Gorham the extra motivation to get the ball into the hands of the SMAA's top scorer was too much for them to handle.

Gorham opened the second half scoring with a free throw before Gribbin drove through the lane and hit a jumper over the arms of three Gorham defenders to record her 1,000th and 1,001th points. The gym erupted and the officials whistled the clock to stop for a presentation at midcourt. The gym was rocking as Gribbin, Coach Cummings and Windham High School Athletic Director Rich Drummond met in front of the scorer's table. Drummond presented Gribbin with a plaque and a sweatshirt from Windham Youth Basketball. Coach Cummings presented her with the game ball. Gribbin ran across the court and up into the stands to give her parents the items, and hugs. The crowd continued to cheer until Gribbin returned to the court.

The celebration took the energy out of the crowd and out of the Eagles when play continued. Gorham hit a three pointer before Berthiaume battled for an offensive rebound at the other end scored a hard fought basket. Gorham went on a 5-0 run that was interrupted by Steph Frost's third bucket of the game. Gorham scored again before Berthiaume connected on one of two free throws to give the Eagles a 38-24 lead. Gorham scored the next two baskets. Gribbin hit two more baskets sandwhiched around another Steph Frost basket. Windham led 44-28 at the end of three quarters.

Gorham made a run at Windham in the fourth quarter opening with three points before Gribbin scored. Gorham continued trying to make it a game going on another five point run before Gribbin connected on two more shots. Gorham refused to give up answering with four points of their own before Bebe Butts drained a three for her first points of the game. Gribbin traded a basket with Gorham and Gorham added a free throw before Gribbin scored her final basket of the night tying her career high 36 points. Gorham scored their final basket before Berthiaume went two for two from the foul line to close out the scoring.

Early in the season Coach Cummings said she asked Gribbin to score more this season. When asked whether the 27 and 36 points she scored in her last two games is what she was looking for she responded with a laugh, "Ive been asking her to do it for the past 3-1/2 years so its about time she did it." Cummings continued, "She can do what she did the last two games every single night. She could have done that since her freshman year. Its nice she finally looking for her offense a little more. She is a true point guard and wants to set other people up. She also had five assists tonight so its nice to see that she now knows she can score big points and still set people up."

Gribbin ended the game with 1,015 career points leaving her 30 short of Lea Bennett's ('98) girls school record of 1,045 points. With nine games remaining in the regular season it seems like a safe bet that Gribbin is going to set the new standard on the girls side.

Coach Cummings confirmed, "The school scoring record is 1,045. I hope she keeps playing with the scoring mentality and she will break it in no time."

When asked about the possibility of setting the new school girls scoring record Gribbin replied, "Im not too worried about it. Getting this one over with was a big deal to me. I'm not worried about it...if it comes it comes. We are just going to play our game."
