WYBA Senior League Playoffs continue
WYBA Senior League

March 8, 2011

Windham ME: The Windham Youth Basketball (WYBA) playoffs continued tonight with the boys and girls senior league semifinals taking place at the Windham High School (WHS) gym. The winners of these games earned a trip to the Championship on Saturday.

The girls number one seed, Raymond Rec White hosted the fourth seed Allied Engineering. Allied Engineering began the season 4-0 before Raymond whose record was 2-2 landed on their schedule in weeks five and six. Raymond won both regular season matchups against Allied Engineering this year. The first game Raymond won 27-18 on January 15th and they won the second game 28017 on January 22nd. Those two matchups contributed to Allied falling down the rankings to fourth and Raymond climbing to take the number one seed into the playoffs.

Both teams were ready to play tonight. Allied led at the end of every quarter but never by more than five points. Allied led 10-8 after one quarter and 14-10 at halftime. Allied extended their lead to 26-20 after three quarters and held off a later Raymond surge to win 33-29.

This game was one of, if not the closest game of the playoffs so far. Neither team led by more than five points. Bob the Screenprinter got a scare midway through the third quarter when Olivia left the game holding her wrist and a 10-7 lead. It didnt take long for Windham Millworks to take 11-10 lead before Olivia re-entered the game. The lead changed several times before Bob the Screenprinter took a 20-15 lead lat in the fourth quarter. Windham Millworks made a late run scoring four quick points to make it 20-19. Windham Millworks found themselves with a chance to win the game, with an inbound pass under the basket with a few seconds left in the game. Windham Millworks got off the last shot which bounced off the rim and back to the shooter as time rean out.

The top seeded Buck's Naked BBQ found themselves in a battle early in their semifinal matchup with G&K Motors. Bucks held a slim 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to 14-8 at halftime. They outscored G&K 10-6 in the third quarter to open their lead to 24-14. Bucks ran away with the game in the fourth, outscoring G&K 12-2 to record the 36-16 win to punch their ticket to the league championship on Saturda.

The second seed Raymond Blue had their hands full with the third seed Raymond White. Unlike the Windham teams, Raymond teams were wearing their town name on their jerseys while Windham's teams were wearing jerseys with sponsor names on them. Battling with another team for the right to represent your town in a championship game adds a little extra intensity to the game.

Raymond Blue vs Raymond White

Raymond Blue jumped out to a big lead early. Raymond White refused to go down without a fight and battled back from an 11-2 deficit to pull within two points. The game remained competitive from that point on. Raymond Blue managed to hold on for the 23-18 win, earning the spot against Bucks Naked BBQ in the championship on Saturday.
