Calvin Field celebrates his second SMYFL championship.
Windham, ME: In 2008, the Windham Middle School football team defeated Saco 27-6 to win the Southern Maine Youth Football League (SMYFL) Championship. Calvin Field quarterbacked that team to Windham’s first football championship. Three years later Windham is once again defeated Saco (46-14) to win the SMYFL championship. This time Field was a member of the coaching staff.
Field is a Junior at Windham High School. While his friends were playing football for Windham High School this fall, he took on a new role of assistant coach for the middle school team. Middle School Coach Rich Johnson asked Field to assist him as the quarterbacks coach last year but Field’s schedule was already full with fall baseball.
This was Field’s second year not being able to play football due to multiple concussions he suffered in football and basketball. The last concussion came in June 2010 during summer basketball. The severity of that concussion meant he would not be able to play basketball and football for the foreseeable future because the risk for another concussion was far too great.

Field decided not to play fall baseball this year and accepted the offer to be an assistant coach with the middle school football team as a way to be involved with the sport he loves and missed.
Coach Johnson said, “Calvin has outstanding character and he has a passion for football. When he couldn't play any more we wanted to find a way that he could contribute to the Windham Football Family in a positive manner. We hit pay dirt with Calvin! He is incredibly responsible for his age and he takes his position very seriously.”

Field’s official roles were offensive coordinator and quarterback coach of the JV squad. When he is working with the middle school players he pulls from what he has learned from his own coaches. Field Said, “I learned in HS under Coach Jay McLeod I am teaching the middle school kids. Also, Coach Coons has helped me on the side with pointers. I have asked him questions and he has given me his feedback. I have tried to mirror Coach Coons in certain situations in practices. I remember what I thought worked for him as a coach during my eighth grade year and use it.”

Field says being a high school student is an advantage for him when coaching the middle school players, “I have been where they are and where they are going in high school. I can tell them what Coach Perkins will expect from them as players too.”
When asked what the most important thing he could teach the players this year Field said, “I think there are many important things. Having fun, winning as a team with class and losing with class too.”
He says the hardest thing about coaching this year has been, “Being asked why I don’t play football anymore. WHY? Because I can’t and I miss it.”

The highlight of coaching this year was, “Going out to dinner with the coaches after the Sanford games. It made me feel like I was accepted and respected. Also, Coach Johnson has let me call plays. I feel accepted by the coaches and they treat me like a coach and not like a 16 year old kid.”
Coach Johnson added, “Calvin pushes the kids to play at a higher level. He stresses the finer points of the game without yelling or putting kids down. He has totally gained the respect of his players, parents, and coaching staff.”
Field said, “Hopefully” this is the beginning of a long coaching career.
Coach Johnson summed up his thoughts on Coach Field, “Windham Middle School Football is very lucky to have a role model like Calvin Field to look up to.”
