What is half a step in time? Top of photos has Eagle runner Lyuda Barankevich a half a step ahead of McAuley runner Jen Field in the Senior 40 yd dash prelims. The answer is a tenth of a second. David Field photo.
Forward: This story is presented on behalf of John Sullivan who is on deployment with the US Coast Guard. John checks this site to keep up on local sports activities in Windham. John, fair seas!!
Portland, ME:
Portland-We arrived at the Portland Expo Saturday morning at 7:30am. I had my camera, my bleacher chair, a couple of snacks and was ready to watch the activities. The girls events started promptly at 8am with the hurdles and 40yd dash prelims. After that, the infield was cleared and High Jump and Junior Shot Put events took it over, with some long distance races being run on the track. Around 11am, the official opening ceremony was performed. The meet director gave an overview which included a history of track at the Expo. 1924 was the first year a track meet was held at the Expo. 1928 was the first year the Southwestern Maine Track Meet was held at the Expo. The tracks that are used in the Expo have been in use since 1959. A plea was put out for volunteers to form two committees. One to research, design and recommend new track fixtures for the Expo. The second committee to be formed will be to fund raise to financially support committee one’s work. After that, the National Anthem was sung by a young lady from Westbrook. She was offered to take Christine Aguilera’s position in the future.

During some of the races, there was a little bumping and falls on the turns. One South Portland runner fell, got up and finished her race, all the while crying. Fans from all over the Expo were cheering her on to finish the face. After her teammates helped her to the SP seating section, a bag of ice was promptly brought to her to minimize the swelling from her fall.

The Girls Southwesterns was really a battle between Thornton Academy and Bonny Eagle. They swapped leads throughout the meet. Bonny Eagle, led by the Dosti sisters, prevailed at the end. While the final events were being run, the boys teams began filtering in for their version. The Windham Girls finished 13th, just ahead of Westbrook and just behind Catherine McAuley. The point scorers for Windham were Ariana Davidson who placed third in the Junior Hurdles, Cassie Gordan who placed sixth in the Senior Shot Put and the Relay 4x210yd Relay team of Ariana Davidson, Natalie Van Baars, Mary Margaret Green and Luba Barankevich who placed sixth.

I learned this morning from the Sunday Telegram that the boys meet victor was Scarborough. Like I wrote a few weeks ago, track is a matter of numbers and if you have strength in those numbers, it creates success.

Early on in this meet, you could tell it would be a different day. There were more false starts resulting in disqualifications. There was a little more pushing and shoving on the corners of the track and because the meet started at 3:30, it was going to be a long night. We stayed until 7:45pm. After twelve plus hours, I had enough of people screaming at tired runners and fans encouraging their teams. Don’t take that as a negative comment. I was just tired! However, we witnessed Nick Burton place fifth in the 40yd dash for Windham. We witnessed Pat Rice finish fifth in the hurdles for Windham. We witnessed Madison St. Peter take a two hand shove from a Westbrook runner in a corner. St. Peter recovered and wasn’t disqualified. He always had his lane and this shove didn’t happen on a pass attempt like two weeks ago. St. Peter had earlier been disqualified from the 40yd dash because he false started.

So, now comes the State Class A Championship on Monday, February 21 at USM. This event will be the season ending event for Indoor Track. Only those individuals who have beaten the qualifying times can compete at this event. So, with strength in numbers and power behind those numbers, Scarborough looks to be a dominating force. But, will a team from the northern section of the State carry a little more power in strong numbers? Only a week will tell.

He was disqualified in the 40yd dash prelims for a false start and during the 200, he was shoved in the back by a Westbrook runner. The shove did not result in any action by track officials, but certainly caught the attention of many in attendance.
