Falmouth, ME: The Windham High School boys soccer team defeated Messalonskee High School 3-1 to capture the school's first gold ball in boys soccer.

Windham was in control for most of the first half, giving Messalonskee very few chances before Soucy sent another beautiful cross to Lentine who headed the ball for the game winner at 33:56 into the match.

Messalonskee never backed off and began to get more chances in the second half. Oleksandr Shatskov put Messalonskee on the scoreboard 59:05 into the match. That goal caused Windham to play with more urgency. Devin Pelletier played a pass to Reynolds who buried it to extend Windham's lead to 3-1.

Messalonskee continued to impress, kept their heads up and created more opportunities in Windham's end. Messkalonskees Chris Hall came close to a scoring apportunity against his cousin, Windham's senior keeper Dana King, but Windham defender Erik Gumaer pulled him down from behind by his shirt outside the 18 yard line. Gunaer was sent off with a red card, leaving Windham to finish the match with 10 players. Messkalonskee didnt get a shot off on the free kick and King came up with some big saves late to preserve the lead and the first state championship for windham boys soccer.

Per MPA rules, Gumaer will have to sit out the Eagle's first regular season game next fall.

A new standard has been set at Windham High School over the past few years. The boys soccer title is the third state title that Windham High School boys teams have won in the past three years. Prior to 2009 the girls soccer team had won the school's only two state titles in the mid 1990's back when Windham competed in class B athletics. Then Windham won the 2009 Class A football championship, the 2010 Class A boys tennis championship and now the 2011 class A boys soccer championship.

The line to enter the stadium stretched from the entrance to the high school and stayed that way for more than 30 minutes as 2500 fans came out to watch. The size of the Windham crowd impressed many veteran high school soccer coaches.
