Windham, ME: Last year Windham High School students Matt Desomnd and Matt Dyer came up with an idea to renovate the decrepit basketball courts behind Manchester School to provide a safe place for kids to play basketball. With the help of the Maine Red Claws, their partners and many others that idea is close to becoming a reality.
The Red Claws joined their effort, as well as the Red Claws partners, Quirk Chevrolet and Mercy Hospital, who along with the Town of Windham and local businesses have contributed to the renovation efforts. Maine Red Claws Director of Public & Community Relations has confirmed "We've raised a little over $15,000 which was our original goal. Now that the snow is starting to melt we will be in touch with the town and the two boys (Desmond and Dyer) soon to start planning the actual construction."
The Red Claws are hopeful more finds will come in which would enable the little "extras", things like player benches, spectator seating etc to further improve the playing experience.
Spaulding added, "thanks to the tremendous support of the town and the efforts of the boys, the $15,000 is in hand and we are ready to move forward with the paving. Hoefully we can get everything done in time for late spring or early summer. That will depend predominantly on the paving company's schedule."
