Windham parents forming Youth Lacrosse League
Windham Youth Lacrosse

Windham, ME:
A group of Windham parents are meeting on December 8th to form a new Youth Lacrosse League.
Su-Anne Hammond is the driving force behind the movement to start a new league. She said, "I started to pursue forming Windham Youth Lacrosse because my son Jakob has been playing for Gorham Youth Lacrosse for the past few years and we found out last season that although he can play in 6th grade he will not be able to play in 7th and 8th grade because that team is for Gorham Middle School kids only."
Currently any Windham children who want to play Lacrosse can play in Gorham up through sixth grade. When they get to seventh grade they have no options so they take two years off before being able to play for Windham High School in ninth grade.
Hammond has done her research and the legwork to gather support for the new league. She contacted US Lacrosse to see how to become a sanctioned chapter under them. She also contacted the Windham High School Athletic Director to gain his support and possible field use. She has also contacted WHS boys varsity coach Chris Shorr. Hammond added, "Chris was very excited to form a youth league because he has had lots of interest at the high school level with players that unfortunately have little prior experience."
The final and maybe most important piece of her efforts has been gethering support from other Windham families. Hammmond said "After a few days of circulating emails and talking to people I have created a Windham Youth Lacrosse distribution list with over 60 families on it. I have several key parents that have spoken up and are willing to be on the board and help whenever possible."
Hammond is working on a draft of bylaws and tax information for non-profit status to bring to the first official meeting of all interested parents at the Windham Public Library at 7:00PM on December 8th. Hammond said, "On the eighth I am hoping to elect a board and get things rolling to include winter clinics to introduce the sport for both boys and girls, fundraising, possible sponsorship, member recruitment, etc..."
Anyone interested in learning more or helping with the Windham Youth Lacrosse League is encouraged to attend the first meeting:
