February 14, 2010

Ethan Spaulding blocks #20's view as he looks to pass in the first half. Spaulding was one of three Eagles with five points in the game.

Freeport ME: The fifth grade boys travel basketball team's season came to an end this afternoon after their 31-30 loss to Greely.

Mitchell Delcourt hits a free throw late in the game with Cameron Hoffses ready to rebound. Delcourt was one of three Eagles with five points while Hoffses added four points and a big presence on the boards.

Windham came out strong riding the momentum from their two point victory over Scarborough this morning. Austin McGowan picked up where he left off in that game by scoring the game's first points. Chris Brown scored to put Windham ahead 4-2. Greeley answered before Ethan Spaulding hit a jumper. After a turnover Spaulding was fouled attempting another shot and went 1 for 2 from the line. Greely scored to pull within 7-6 before Spaulding hit another jumper from the foul line. Cameron Hoffses continued his hot day with a basket and Ben McDonald went 1 for 2 from the foul line to stretch Windham's lead to 12-6. Greely scored four straight points before Brown closed out the first half scoring by going 2 for 2 from the line. Windham led 14-10 at the half.

Jacob Frost drains a shot from the elbow. Frost had four points in the game.

Hoffses scored Windham's first points of the second half and McDonald added another bucket to put Windham in front 18-12. Greely went on a 6-0 run. Jacob Frost hit his first basket of the game with a jumper from the elbow. Scarborough answered before Frost drained another shot to put Windham ahead 23-19. Delcourt stretched the lead to 25-19. Then a little confusion transpired after a break in the action and scored on their own basket after an inbound play to cut Greely's lead to 25-21. Greely picked up momentum with tough defense and continued on another 6-0 run that came screeching to a halt when McGowan hit a three-pointer from the right side of the floor. Delcourt went 2 for 2 from the line to stretch Windham's lead back to 30-25 but Greely had more fight in them and went on another 6-0 run, hitting the winning bucket with :34 left in regulation.

Big Ben McDonald looks to distribute the ball. McDonald had three points in the game.

Windham's final shot did not fall and Greely survived to play another game while Windham walked off the court for the last time as a team.

Austin McGowan was one of three Windham players with five points in the game.

Assistant coach Peter Brown tries to sneak into the gym 10 minutes late but we were waiting to catch him in the act. His tardiness was excused as he was coming from another coaching commitment.
