Windham's
boys varsity basketball team during pregame
introductions on Senior Night.
Windham ME:
Windham (12-5) defeated Gorham (4-13) 66-54
in the Eagles final home game of the season.
Point Guard
Adam Szklany scored eight points in his
final game in the Windham High School gym.
The game had
special meaning to seven of the Eagles
players. It was senior night. Andy Brix,
Garret Clemmer, Stephen Lambert, Dillan
McGowan, Adam Szklany, Jackson Taylor and
Nick Taylor were all playing their final
varsity basketball game in the Windham High
School gym. Athletic Director Steve Merrill
estimated the attendance at around 900-1,000
people on Senior Night.
SLIDE SHOW
The
Windham gym was packed with friends,
family and fans wearing OPEN SEASON ON
ALS in support of senior Jackson Taylor
and his family.
The game had
another significance. It was the culmination
of a fundraising effort to benefit star
quarterback and basketball guard Jackson
Taylor's family. Jackson's father Keith has
ALS and the basketball program has been
raising money to help the Taylor family with
some of the expenses they have incurred. One
of the fundraisers has been selling T-shirts
that say OPEN SEASON ON ALS on the front and
EAGLES UNITE TO JOIN THE FIGHT on the back.
The proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts
are being donated to them. The goal was to
have people buy them and wear them to the
game tonight. It was impossible to look
anywhere in the gym without seeing one of
the tie-dyed shirts.
The Gorham
Rams even took part in the fundraising
event. The Gorham players warmed up in OPEN
SEASON ON ALS shirts with RAMS UNTIE AND
JOIN THE FIGHT on the back.
Prior to the
pre-game introductions each of the six
seniors names were called. They were given
flowers to give to their parents. Each layer
went to the bleachers and handed them to
their parents as they hugged. Each player
returned to the bench with a gift bag from
their parents.
Garrett
Clemmer was selected for the Maine
McDonald's Senior All-Star game.
There was one
more special event to take place before the
introductions of the starting lineups.
Senior Garrett Clemmer was honored as a
Maine McDonald's High School Senior All-Star
Game selection.
Senior Andy
Brix (far right) would have liked his final
game in the Windham High School gym to go a
little differently. The 6'6" Brix scored
four points before getting into early foul
trouble and ultimately fouling out early in
the fourth quarter.
Game time
arrived and the Eagles were ready, jumping
out to an 11-0 lead. Andy Brix got the
scoring started and Nolan Allen added five
points and Garrett Clemmer added four points
before Ryan Luxton scored to put Gorham on
the board. Brix and Gorham's Mason Roy
exchanged baskets before Windham went on
another 11 point run. Clemmer led the way
during the run with eight points, including
two three-pointers and Adam Szklany added a
three-pointer of his own. Andy Turner ended
the run with a three pointer of his own.
Dillan McGowan answered with a basket for
Windham and Allen closed out the first
quarter scoring going 2 for 2 from the foul
line to stake Windham to a commanding 28-7
lead after one quarter.
Senior
Point Guard Stephen "Stevo" Lambert dropped
10 points in his final game in the Windham
High School gym.
Gorham opened
the second quarter with a 10-0 run led by
John Day's six points, Alex Graves hit a
three-pointer and Luxton added a foul shot.
Szklany answered with two free throws and
Allen hit a basket before Clemmer added his
own free throw. Stephen Lambert adde a
basket and Clemmer went 2 for 2 from the
line. Windham took a 37-26 lead into
halftime.
Senior
Garrett Clemmer had another superb day of
shooting. Clemmer scored 20 points to be the
game high scorer one last time in the
Windham High School gym.
The Eagles
took control of the game again in the third
quarter, outscoring the Rams 14-8. Sophomore
standout Allen led the way with seven
points, Lambert added three and Clemmer and
Nick Taylor had two points each in the
quarter.
Senior
Dillan McGowan scored two points in his
final game in the Windham High School gym.
Gorham
outscored Windham 20-15 in the fourth
quarter. The Eagles fourth quarter points
came from six different players; Lambert 5,
Clemmer 3, Szklany 3, Nick Taylor 2, Jackson
Taylor 1 and Nolan Allen had one point.
Senior Nick
Taylor scored four points in the final game
of his career in the Windham High School
gym.
Fittingly, all
seven seniors scored in their final home
game. Clemmer led all scorers with 20
points, Stephen "Stevo" Lambert scored 10
points, Adam Szklany had eight points, Andy
Brix had four points, Nick Taylor had four
points, Dillan McGowan had two points and
Jackson Taylor had one point.
