High Flying Eagles Win sixth in a row

Basketball - WHS Boys Varsity

January 15, 2010

Adam Szklany puts in a layup in the first quarter. Szklany had 10 points on the night.

Windham ME: Windham (8-3) edges Bonny Eagle (5-5) 38-35 for their sixth consecutive victory.

Garrett Clemmer scored the first five points of the game, giving the Eagles a 5-0 lead. Adam Szklany added a bucket to make the score 7-2. Clemmer scored another basket and Lambert added his own to stake Windham to an 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Adam Szklany scored half of his ten points in the second quarter, beginning with a three pointer to open the scoring for the Eagles. Clemmer added two more points to his game high 16 points and Szklany concluded Windham's second quarter scoring efforts with two free throws to give Windham an 18-15 lead at halftime.

The Windham cheerleaders energized the crowd at halftime with their longest routine of the season.

Clemmer started the scoring again in the second half, this time with a three-pointer. Lambert scored his second basket of the game before Clemmer hit another shot to give Windham a 25-23 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Bonny Eagle scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to take a 27-25 lead, their first of the game. The Eagles responded quickly when Andy Brix stole the ball at midcourt and got the ball to Szklany who found Nolan Allen down low for a layup to tie up the game.  Szklany stole the ball on the Scots ensuing possession and once again found Allen who put in another layup to give Windham the lead for good. The points were the first of the night for Allen, who was strong with the game on the line, finishing with eight points in the fourth quarter.

Clemmer scored his final points of the night to stretch Windham's lead to 31-27. The Scots pulled to within two points before Allen hit another bucket to give Windham a 33-29 lead. Bonny eagle closed the gap again, pulling to within a point 33-32 with 56 seconds left in regulation. The Scots had five fouls to give and they used them all before sending Szklany to the line multiple times. Szklany hit three free throws putting Windham out front 36-32 before Bonny Eagle's Steven Simonds answered with a three pointer to bring Bonny Eagle to within one point, 36-35. The Scots sent Allen to the line. He hit both free throws giving Windham a 38-35 lead with 10 seconds left in the game. Bonny Eagle's last second three point attempt bounced off the rim at the buzzer and the Eagles celebrated their sixth straight victory. (Scroll down to bottom to watch the end of the game)

Coach Millington talks to his team late in the game while the student body is on their feet behind them.

Clemmer said the game plan tonight was "Defense always, we know they're smaller than us, we've got to crash hard on the offensive glass. They play real hard as a team. They get the easy points that they need to win ball games."

Coach Millington agreed, "We knew Bonny Eagle was going to play methodically, pretty slow, pack it in a little on defense. We wanted to be very physical on defense control the tempo and I felt for three quarters of the game or a little over half of the game we did that. At times we got a little sloppy then we knew we had to be aggressive offensively. When we would go on a run you could tell the difference where we would attack the rim then we would go on these stretches where we didn't take care of the basketball or shoot 2-3 threes in a row and just weren't aggressive and we needed to be  aggressive tonight."

Andy Brix looks to distribute the ball early in the first quarter.

Clemmer was still recovering from being sick this week. He said, "I normally shoot a little more early. The shots weren't going down tonight so I made a point of going inside."

Millington added, "If I notice he is missing his jump shots short then we will run a play to get him inside to get him going and he is good inside. Maybe he gets fouled he gets some foul shots. When he gets going, then he will drain a three."

Millington continued, "That's true of anybody, not just Garrett. We often times try to go to Nolan (Allen) early to try to get him into the game quicker because when we have done well this year offensively, when he (Clemmer) has done well offensively, Nolan (Allen) or Andy (Brix), or down in Noble Steve-o (Stephen Lambert) it stretches the defense a little wider and gets Garrett into one on one opportunities to get a good look, but if we're quiet with the other 4 guards it makes it harder on Garrett (Clemmer).

Millington said the game plan at the end of the tight contest was "To run our offense and only take layups if we had them. If we needed to score basket because it was tied or we were losing we would have run a set a play that went to either Nolan (Allen) or Garrett (Clemmer)."

Windham will put their win-streak on the line at 1PM on Monday when they travel to face the 5-6 Scarborough Red Storm.
