Something had to give
in this contest between two teams mired in losing
streaks. Entering the game, the Monks had dropped
five straight after defeating nationally-ranked
Emmanuel College January 7th. With the loss, the
Blue Jays have now lost 13 games in a row.
St. Joe’s left little
doubt as to which team would end its winless drought
on this night, as the Royal Blue held the lead from
wire to wire.
The Monks jumped out
to an early lead and held an 11-2 cushion after
McDevitt hit her first of three treys at the 15:19
mark. The Blue Jays chipped away with five
unanswered points from Schiano, the leading scoring
in the conference, in the next minute. St. Joe’s
answered by outscoring the visitors by a 10-2 margin
over the subsequent six minutes and led 21-9 after
another McDevitt trifecta with 9:58 to go in the
first half.
Schiano drove the lane
and converted a layup at the 7:41 mark to cut the
Monk lead to single digits, 22-13, but the Royal
Blue proceeded to score nine unanswered points, with
four coming from Freeman, over the following four
minutes and wound up carrying an 18-point lead,
38-20, into the intermission.
The Monks shot 41.9%
from the field in the opening half, while the Blue
Jays mustered a 25.8% effort overall. McDevitt led
all scorers with 13 points in the first period.
St. Joe’s led by 20
for the vast majority of the second stanza and
gained a game-high 27-point lead, 57-30, after
Daigle made a layup with 7:40 to play.
Monks’ freshman guard
Melanie Cloutier (Paris, ME) scored five points, her
first collegiate output, and added her first NCAA
three-pointer in the victory. Amelia Lamb ’12
(Topsham, ME) made her first appearance of the
season and netted two points in four minutes of
mop-up duty.
St. Joe’s shot 37.1%
(26-70) overall, 21.1% (4-19) from three-point
range, and 63.2% (12-19) from the line, while Saint
Joseph (Conn.) shot 30% (18-60) from the field,
11.8% (2-17) from three-point distance and 52.6%
(10-19) from the FT line in the loss. The Monks held
a 53-41 advantage on the glass, with 17 offensive
caroms, and registered 21 assists on 26 field goals.
St. Joe’s will play at
Albertus Magnus (8-10, 4-2 GNAC) on Saturday at 1:00
PM, while Saint Joseph (Conn.) will travel to Lasell
(5-13, 1-4 GNAC) on Saturday for a 1:00 PM tip-off.
