Portland:
McAuley’s bats were hot as they cranked
three home runs to defeat the Deering
Rams 13-1 in five innings.
After
suffering their first loss of the season
on Monday to Kennebunk 5-4 in the bottom
of the seventh inning, McAuley didn’t
seem fazed by the loss and took their
frustration out on the Deering Rams.
Freshman pitcher Gabby Townsend struck
out 7, walked one, allowed one run and
scored three runs, one of which was a
home run.
In the
first inning, the Lion’s Amber Libby
reached on a single. Sam Schildroth
drew a walk to put two runners on. Jen
Field cranked a deep fly to center field
that was caught, but it was good enough
to score Libby to get the Lions on the
board.

In the
second inning, the Lions kept chipping
away. Number seven, eight and nine
batters all hit singles to generate 2
runs to extend the McAuley lead. In the
fourth, Townsend gave up two hits and
Deering’s Jen Lynch ran home on a passed
ball to get the Rams on the board.
McAuley promptly answered in the bottom
frame generating two runs of their own,
again, from the bottom of the order.
Deering changed pitchers and brought in
Chelsea Saucier with two outs. The
inning ended when Sara Mercier casually
ran to second, with a runner on third
and was thrown out by the Ram catcher.
In the
fifth, McAuley’s offense came to life to
spark an eight run inning to end the
game due to the 12-run mercy rule. All
players except Amber Libby would
contribute to the scoring effort. The
win puts the Lions record at 4-1 on the
season.
