Youth Wrestling

Part of wrestling is having a strong "core". Here the kids work on leg elevations to help strengthen their stomach muscles. David Field photo.

The Kratos Wrestling Club was the “brainchild” of Thom Johnson who currently coaches the Middle School Wrestling Team.  Thom also is helping Kurt Pelletier with the High School Wrestling Team.

The club is currently led by President George Lekusi and Kurt Pelletier, Vice President and Thom Johnson still remains involved.  For a $50 fee, this club offers workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm -7:30pm for kids in the kindergarten through sixth grade levels.

When I stopped by recently, George and his crew of four assistants had more than 30 kids in attendance preparing for the wrestling moves to be learned.  The kids spend the first 30-40 minutes stretching and exercising in preparation for the wrestling training.

The club participates in tournaments held in March for the youth levels.  Typically, the tournaments are held in Westbrook, Sanford and Mt. Ararat.  Windham’s Club also hosts scrimmage meets in order to tune up for the tournament competitions.  The competition culmination is the New England Competition that is held at the Civic Center that includes the older and younger kids.

The MS Wrestling season starts on February 2 with practices.  The MS Meet schedule is:

March 3, @ Scarborough Jr. High

March 5th @ Westbrook Jr. High

March 10th Home with Bonny Eagle

March 12th Home with York Middle School

March 17th @ Massabesic

March 19th Home with Lincoln Jr. High

March 24th Home with Westbrook Jr. High

March 26th @ Noble Jr. High
