Wells ME: Windham's
9/10 year old travel baseball team battled back from
a 9-0 deficit on Sunday to defeat Scarborough 13-10
in the travel league's season ending tournament.
Dana Nichols took the
mound for Windham. He struck out the first
Scarborough batter and helped his cause by fielding
a ground ball and throwing a batter out at first,
and then caught an infield fly for the unassisted
out to end the inning. Scarborough scored two runs
in the inning.
Nichols reached base
in the bottom of the first on a walk and moved to
second on a passed ball with McAvoy at the plate.
Nichols moved to third on another passed ball before
McAvoy reached first on a walk. The inning ended
with runners at the corners.
Nichols got the first
batter of the second inning to fly out to center
fielder Caleb Klowas who made a great running catch.
The next batter walked, and the following batter was
hit by a pitch before the next two batters each hit
doubles that scored a total of three runs.
Scarborough managed another RBI single before Evan
Millet came in to pitch. One more Scarborough run
crossed the plate before the 5 run per inning rule
ended the top of the second inning.
Klowas led off the
Windham half of the second inning by beating out a
throw for an infield single to third base. Klowas
was thrown out trying to steal second base on a
passed ball. One out later Spencer Watkins drew a
four pitch walk but was stranded on first at the end
of the inning.
Millet came out to
pitch again in the top of the third inning and got
the first batter to pop out to Tommy "Backstop"
McAvoy. A walk and and a single later brought Ben
Brooks in relief of Millet. Brooks fielded a ground
ball off the bat of the first batter he faced and
threw him out at first for the second out of the
inning. A walk, two singles and two runs later
Brooks recorded his first strike out of the game for
the final out of the top of the third inning.
The Windham bats came
alive in the bottom of the third inning. JT Russell
led off with a walk. Ethan Spaulding followed with a
single. Giovanni Ruotolo drove in both runners with
a double and scored on Tanner Bernier's 2-out single
to right field. Nichols hit a triple that scored
Bernier and McAvoy hit an infield single that scored
Nichols invoking the five run per inning rule.
Ben Brooks took the
mound in dominating fashion in the fourth inning;
striking out the side in order, all swinging.
Caleb Klowas lead off
the Windham half of the fourth with a walk and stole
second on a passed ball. Brooks worked the count
full before earning a walk. Klowas and Brooks
advanced to second and third bases on a passed ball
while Spencer Watkins was working on a walk. Hunter
Coffin came to the plate with the bases juiced and
slapped a double just inside the foul line in right
field, scoring two runs. Russell earned his second
walk of the game to load the bases. Tyler Grant
slapped a two run single to right center field
before Spaulding hit an infield single that loaded
the bases again. Ruotolo capped the fourth inning
scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Russell
from third base.
Ben Brooks took the
mound again in the fifth inning. He struck out the
first batter he faced for his fifth consecutive
strike out. Two walks later he got the batter to pop
out to SS Nichols. Brooks ended the inning with his
sixth strikeout of the game after giving up a run
scoring double and hitting a batter.
Mitchell Delcourt led
off the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk and
scored on a double by Bernier. Nichols drove Bernier
in with a single and stole second on a passed ball.
One out later Millet walked and Klowas followed by
driving in a run on a ground out. Brooks reached on
a walk before the inning ended.
Tanner Bernier came in
to pitch in the top of the sixth with Windham ahead
13-10. Bernier closed out the game by striking out
the side in order. |
