Windham ME: Windham's
9 and 10 year old summer travel baseball team opened
their season at Lowell Field against Cape Elizabeth.
The Capers notched a 9-7 win in the instructional
league game.
Tanner Bernier started
on the mound for Windham and cruised through the
first inning, striking out the side and allowing one
walk. Cape Elizabeth's Daniel Howard was equally
impressive, striking out all three batters he faced
in the bottom of the first inning.
Cape Elizabeth's Evan
Concannon opened the second inning with a walk and
advanced to second base on a passed ball before
Bernier struck out the next two batters and then got
Casey Cloutier to ground out to SS Dana Nichols for
the third out of the inning. The Windham batters
started making contact in the home half of the
second inning. With one out, Ben Brooks grounded out
to the first basemen. Next Dana Nichols came to the
plate with two outs and crushed a 3-2 pitch over the
centerfielders head. Nichols was on his way to third
base when he realized he didn't touch second on his
way by. Nichols reversed direction trying to tag
second but the Cape centerfielder was able to get
the ball back in time for Nichols to be tagged out
at second for the final out of the inning.

Cape started the third
when Jack Misterovich reached second base on an
error. Aiden Knowles followed him with a walk. Both
runners advanced one base on a passed ball. Bernier
struck out Howard to record the first out before
Drew Harrington drew a walk to load the bases. Chase
Kozlowski recorded the game's first RBI when he
grounded out to Bernier who threw him out at first.
Cape's next batter, Sam Berman hit a fly ball to
Right Fielder Justin Russell who made a great shoe
string catch to record the final out of the third
inning.
Ethan Spaulding came
in to pitch the fourth inning, walking David Hare to
start the inning and advanced to second on a passed
ball. Matt Concannon followed with an RBI single.
With no outs and Concannon on third, Jacob Jordan
grounded into a 1-3-2 double play when Spaulding
fielded a soft grounder and threw to first baseman
Ben Brooks who alertly spotted Concannon trying to
score and gunned him down at the plate. Evan
Concannon reached on a walk before Spaulding settled
down and struck out the next batter on three
pitches.
Windham got on the
scoreboard in the fourth inning. Avery Schrock led
off the inning with a single, and advanced to second
and then third base on passed balls before Cameron
McCartney hit a two out RBI single. Windham stranded
McCartney on third.

Spaulding came back
out to start the fifth inning but continued to look
uncomfortable on the mound. Nat Jordan drew a walk,
Casey Cloutier recorded a single and Jack
Misterovich walked to load the bases before Coach
Mike Russell came out to make the pitching change.
Russell brought in Ben Brooks to face Aiden Knowles
who laid down a bunt single for the RBI. Daniel
Howard followed with an RBI single before Drew
Harrington grounded to Brooks who threw to second
for the fielders choice. Another run scored on the
play. Chase Kozlowski and David Hare drew walks to
load the bases again before Matt Concannon walked in
the fifth run of the inning. The summer travel
league has a five run rule per inning so the fifth
run ended the inning even though Windham only
recorded two outs.
Windham answered in
the top of the sixth. Dana Nichols earned a one out
walk, followed by Tanner Bernier with a walk of his
own. Spaulding hit a 1-1 pitch between the pitcher
and first baseman driving in two runs. A throwing
error on the play sent Spaulding to third base.
Justin Russell and Giovani Rilotolo walked to load
the bases before Josh Lacombe drew a bases loaded
walk to drive in Spaulding. Avery Schorck and
Trevor Crowley followed with bases loaded walks
forcing in two more runs. Once again the five run
rule took effect and the inning was over.
Windham and Cape
Elizabeth exchanged runs in the sixth inning. |
