STANDISH ME: After the December 27th defeat to Windham, McAuley came to St. Joseph’s pool with a full squad and energy to win the meet 105-102 and also defeat Yarmouth with 88 points.  Windham managed three first place finishes and managed a number of seconds and thirds to add to the point total.  The majority of the girls swim team are underclassmen, which bodes well for the years to come.

Recapping the first place finishes for Windham:
200yd Freestyle: Elaine Miller (FR) 2:13.18 (New HS Pool Record)

200yd Individual Medley: Ashley Crocker (FR) 2:40.35 (New HS Pool Record)

500yd Freestyle: Elaine Miller 6:02.27 (FR) (New HS Pool Record)

FRIEND OR FOE?

Competing in any sporting event puts an athlete in competition with friends, even if they are from the same town or a different town.  Take the case of Windham resident and McAuley swimmer Jennifer Field and the 200yd Freestyle Relay.  Starting in Lane one for Windham was Kirsten Russell, a former Little League Softball teammate of Field’s.  Starting in lane two was Field for McAuley.  Starting in lane three was Julie Dursema from Yarmouth, Field’s new U-16 Southern Maine Flame Softball teammate.  Field had mixed feelings swimming against her mates.  Her inner spirit told her to beat them.  As the result turned out for the first 50 yards, Russell out-touched Field by .04 seconds.  Field out-touched Dursema by 1.2 seconds.  At the end, Field’s squad would be disqualified because the third swimmer left before the swimmer in the pool touched the wall.  Dursema’s squad placed first in the event and Russell’s placed third.
