Windham Wins Bates Shootout

High School Football

June 21, 2009

By David Field & Todd Coons

Lewiston-  We all know it is baseball season, however, football skills and drills are under way.  Bates College was the place Saturday for a Football Skills competition among the top teams in the state.  It was a non O-Line and non D-Line Skills.  Seven on seven the whole day.  The field was broken up into zones. Offensive zone one was worth one point.  Zone two worth two points.  Zone three worth three points and if the receiver made it to the end-zone untouched, it was worth six points.  Defense also recorded points.  An incomplete pass was worth one point.  A tipped pass was worth three points and an interception was worth six points.

Windham carried two teams to Lewiston, one JV and the other Varsity.  JV played in round robin and continuously played.  The format was to get the younger squads familiar with the competitive format.

In the morning, the Varsity played four games and were seeded based on their performance for the afternoon games.  Windham was undefeated in the morning, after facing Bonny Eagle, Scarborough, Lisbon, and Old Orchard Beach.  Based on their performance, Windham was seeded first for the finals.  Other coaches were scoping out Windham’s attack.

Windham took a bye in the first round.  Windham then faced Marshwood, defeated them, then faced Jay and shut them down and faced the Lewiston Blue Devils.  The Devils forced an extended play option.   Windham won the coin toss and elected and defense first.  Each team played 10 plays on offense, then defense.  Then each played 5 on opposite sides.  Going into Windham’s final round of offense, they were down by 3 points.  Windham managed to rack up 3 points to tie the contest, forcing an extended game.  Windham won the coin toss and elected defense.  Each team had five plays on offense from mid-field.

Lewiston scored eight points on first five plays.  Windham then took control of the ball.  After four plays, Windham tied the contest.  On the last play, Windham’s Jackson Taylor passed to Matt Gledhill to score one point for the championship.  Each member of the squad received a T-Shirt to commemorate the victory.

Coach Perkins was very ecstatic with the outcome of this.  The Windham squad has five 7 on 7 tournaments this summer.  Windham will be hosting a 12 team tournament on July 10 at the HS complex.

Go Eagles Football!!
