Windham ME: Matt Coffee powered the third ranked Windham boys varsity soccer team to the Western Maine Class A Finals by scoring both goals in  their 2-1 win over seventh ranked Greely on Friday night.

The Greely keeper Liam Maker punches the ball away from the goal.

Windham came out strong in the first half controlling the play with a strong possession game. Windham couldn't capitalize on their dominance. Greely kept Windham off the score board until 39:21 into the half when Matt Coffee connected on his first goal of the game with an assist from Dana King.

Windham took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Windham continued their strong play into the second half putting pressure on the Greely goal. Midway through the half Windham Senior Adam Szklany headed the ball towards an open Greely net. A Greely defender was able to intercept the shot and head the ball back out to Szklany who quickly fired it back on goal but the Greely keeper had recovered and made a great save.

Windham coach Paul Baber said, "Going into the half at 1-0, we knew we needed a second goal. We knew that they would come out strong in the second half. They came out strong in the second half against Gorham."

Both teams got a scare a few minutes later when Windham forward Matt Coffee collided with Greely keeper Liam Maker. Maker made a great play charging a free ball just outside the Greely penalty area that Coffee was trying to run down. The pressure by the Maker prevented Coffee from getting off a shot on goal.

The Windham crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief when Coffee slowly got up and started walking around. Maker remained on the ground until he was helped off the field by trainers. Patrick Blum came into replace Maker in Goal.

Greely evened the score 27:11 into the second half when Jon Coyne hit the back of the Windham net with the assist from Matti Ingraham.

Windham didn't back down and with 8:20 left in regulation they were rewarded for their strong play when Patrick Ciez crossed a ball  to the far side that Matt Coffee brilliantly volleyed into the back of the Greely net for the game winning goal.

Baber said, "That was one of the best goals we have scored this year. That was an unbelievable delivery, a great run to get there and to show great composure to direct it back on goal."

When asked if his team accomplished their goal of playing a better possession game tonight Baber said, "It was a different game completely than against Cape Elizabeth. We dominated, in a good way. Not necessarily in terms of goals but definitely in terms of possession."

Windham will play the winner of the Scarborough vs. Portland game that takes place at 1PM on Saturday October 31.
