BRITISH INVADE WINDHAM WITH OVERWHELMING
SUCCESS
August 17,
2008

Family and
friends spinning with a cone on their head
during the second set of relays. I love
seeing the Windham Sports Pages T-Shirt!
For the second
year in a row
Windham Youth Soccer hosted the
British Challenger Soccer Camp at Gambo
Field in Windham.
The camp is
big on teaching soccer skills and even
bigger on having fun while playing soccer.
On Monday the
campers are divided into teams named after
countries to compete in the
World Cup. Teams earn points for doing
different things during the week. On Friday
the teams are ranked based on the world cup
points they earned all week and play for the
final rankings.
During the
week players could earn World Cup points for
performing a variety of tasks. Competition
for World Cup points was fierce.
One of the
ways players earn points is by attempting
moves during their World Cup games.
On Tuesday
players earned points by wearing their team
colors to camp.

Challenger British Soccer Camps
give each camper a soccer ball
with the words above printed on
them to emphasize the important
aspects of soccer and life. |
There was also
a homework assignment to write down all of
the words on the Challenger Soccer balls
each camper was given, along with the
definition of each word.
There was also
a contest where campers made country flags
for their teams. The top three teams were
awarded World Cup points.
Points were
also awarded to the loudest and most
enthusiastic team.
Parents were
invited to come to camp at 2:15PM on Friday
for the end of camp festivities.

Campers
line up with their teams for the afternoon
festivities.
Right after
parents arrived the campers got into lines
with their teams. Several players from each
team were chosen to "Dress the Coach" in the
craziest accessories possible.

The campers
dressed the coaches.
The campers
and coaches had a blast and the results were
entertaining.

Parents
line up for the relays.
From there the
campers moved to one side of a set of cones
while their family and friends were lined up
opposite them for the parents relay.

Parents
completing the first dribbling relay to earn
points for their childrens' teams.
The first
relay was simple enough, dribbling back and
forth between cones before returning to the
back of their line to sit down and put their
hands on their heads. The teams whose
parents finished first through third were
awarded additional World Cup Points.

Friends and
family spin around while holding a cone to
their head during the relay events at
British Challenger Soccer Camp on Friday.
The relays got
more entertaining as the camp staff had the
family and friends dribble through the cones
and then place a cone on their forehead
while they spun around before dribbling back
to their line. Once again teams were awarded
points when their family and friends
finished first through third.

Campers
made flags to show their team spirit, and
win World Cup points.
The next step
was judging the flags that were made
representing each team's country. The points
for the top three teams were the final ones
added before determining which teams would
play each other for titles.

Team USA
played to a 0-0 tie for 3rd place.
Before leaving
for the day campers had the opportunity to
have the coaches sign their camp ball and to
say goodbye.
The most
impressive observation about the
British Challenger Soccer Camp was that
the campers and coaches always had a smile
on their face. Even on Friday, after a long
week of all day soccer, on the hottest day
so far in August, the players didn't seem to
want to leave.
