Defensive Line Sets the Tone for the Season

Penetrating the
backfield with the linebackers is this squad's
responsibility. Not much has gotten by them this
season in the way of touchdowns.

WINDHAM ME: All
great defenses have something in common; a superior
defensive line.
The great Pittsburgh
Steelers defenses of the 1970's had the Steel
Curtain. The nickname for the front four on the
teams that broke this young Cowboys fan's heart a
couple times.
Through a nine game
stretch in 1976 the Steelers only allowed a
touchdown in one game. They delivered five shutouts
in that same stretch.
If you barely remember
the 1970's and that still sounds eerily familiar too
you, it should. The Windham Middle School A Sqaud
defensive line is leading a defensive unit that is
putting together an equally impressive set of stats.
The team went 8-0
through the regular season. Six of those wins came
by way of shutout. They also picked up a shutout in
a non conference game against Greely.
They have given up a
grand total of three touchdowns this year. One to
Noble, and two to Saco. Not since the 1984 Cheverus
High School Freshman team went 7-0 with four
shutouts has there been this kind of defensive
dominance in Southern Maine.
Dominant defensive
lineman don't live in anonymity like dominant
offensive lineman do. Even if you weren't around in
the 1970's you have probably heard of "Mean" Joe
Green and LC Greenwood, maybe you have even heard of
Ernie Holmes or Dwight White; the Steel Curtain.
Like those great
warriors, this year's middle school defensive line
has gotten a lot of ink. All season we have read
about Josh Rickett, Joe Francoeur, Matt Aldrich and
Jared Libby crushing opposing offenses. We have seen
the incredible pictures of these four laying
devastating hits on unsuspecting foes.
This front four has
one more chance to menace SMYFL offenses when they
face Saco on Sunday for the Championship. Keep up
the great work guys! |
