WINDHAM BOYS TENNIS
TEAM RECORDS UNDEFEATED SEASON (12-0)
May 30, 2008
By Sally Enoch
The Windham boys tennis squad faced two of their
toughest opponents in their final two matches of
the season and emerged the winner in both ending
the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record
and leading the Class A Western Maine Division
in the heal point rankings.
On March 27, Windham faced Scarborough in a
clash of the unbeaten teams. Windham clinched
the match 3-2 after No. 1 singles Nate Johnson
(6-3, 6-2), No. 3 singles Dan McGovern (6-3,
6-4) and the No. 2 doubles team of Fernando
Leon-Prado and Kyle Morrell (7-5, 6-3) all
scored victories. It was an intense match all
the way, and Windham had to raise the level of
tennis against a tough opponent after having
blanked nine teams (5-0) in a row.
The following day, Windham played its final
regular season match against Cheverus, who went
into the match with an impressive 8-2 record.
No. 3 singles player Dan McGovern (6-1, 6-1)
finished quickly, and was soon joined in the
winnerıs circle by No. 2 singles Dan Crocker
(6-3, 6-1) and the doubles team of Morrell and
Leon-Prado (7-6, 6-2).
Windham will enter the playoffs as the number
one seed, giving them a decided advantage in the
brackets. "This year's team has worked very hard
to get to this point in the season," says coach
Wayne Martin, taking a cautious approach. ³One
thing that weighs on their minds is last yearıs
loss in the Western Maine finals to Westbrook.
The team learned from that and it motivated them
to get back. The team is excited about their
12-0 record but realizes that the job is not
done.²
With some more hard work and focus, this could
be the boysı year to go all the way!
