WHS VARSITY BOYS TENNIS
TEAMS WINS PRESEASON TOURNAMENT
April 27, 2008
By Sally Enoch
Windham boys tennis took home the first place
plaque in the inaugural pre-season flight
tournament held on April 24 and 25 at the
Cheverus tennis Courts in Portland. In addition
to Windham, teams from Gorham, Cheverus,
Caribou, South Portland and Westbrook all
competed. Caribou took home second place
honors.
After winning two preliminary matches against
South Portland and Cheverus, Windham's first
doubles team of Kyle Morrell and Kurt Stultz won
in a tough final match against Gorham, 6-1, 3-6,
6-4. The second doubles team of Dylan King and
Andy Brix prevailed in a three-set match against
Cheverus, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. Dan McGovern, who had
a first round bye, made it to the finals in the
third singles division and won against Caribou
player Casey Lancaster 7-5, 6-3.
Dan Crocker advanced to the finals in the second
singles division but lost in a close, three-set
match to the second singles player from Caribou
2-6, 7-5, 7-5. First singles player Nate
Johnson made it to the semi-finals but lost a
tough match to Gorham's Aaron Bergeron 10-6.
Lots more tennis
was played over two beautiful but windy days on
the Cheverus courts, including consolation
matches and JV matches. Windham players hosted
the Caribou team for the tournament, which ended
with a barbecue at Windham high school for the
Windham and Caribou teams and a spirited game of
ultimate frisbee!
