The Windham
Eagles (1-10) visited the McAuley Lions
(2-9) in Portland on Friday, May 23. This
match up featured a young Lion team with
freshman Windham resident Jen Field facing
her home town squad.
In the first
inning, the Eagles went down in order thanks
to the strong Lion’s infield defense, which
fielded 2 fly balls. When McAuley came to
bat, pitcher Robyn Bott allowed Jen Field to
get on with a base hit. Field then was
sacrificed to second base. Then, the Eagles
showed that their defense could hold their
own. Field attempted a steal and the
catcher, Riley Graves threw down to third,
freezing Field halfway. Field attempted to
return to second only to have freshman
Elizabeth Silvius gun her down.

In the second
inning, both teams got on the board. The
Eagles batted their remaining lineup in the
second. Riley Graves got on by an error by
the right fielder and scored the Eagles
first run. Melissa Bedient then got on by a
walk and also converted that to a run thanks
to a triple by Kelly Dubay. McAuley then
came to bat and more than matched the Eagles
scoring. Senior Natalie Brown started off
with a single and eventually scored on a
passed ball. Freshman Kayla Daigle got on
with a walk and scored on a two run homer by
freshman Sara Mercier. Again, only the
remaining line up batted to finish the
second.
The Eagles
only managed one base runner on an error in
the third and were held scoreless. McAuley
would add 2 runs on a home run hit by Senior
Katelyn Call and Natalie Brown would score
after hitting her second single in the game.

The Eagles
would finish their scoring in the fourth by
producing two runs. Melissa Bedient hit a
single and scored on Kelly Dubay’s batted
ball that resulted in an error by Mcauley
first baseman Katelyn Call. Dubay would add
the final run for the Eagles. Defensive
changes marked the bottom of the fourth for
Windham. Robyn Bott was replaced at pitcher
by Elizabeth Silvius. Instead of catching
McAuley off balance, the Lions pounced on
the fresh pitcher by generating five runs.
Four singles, including a bunt and a slap
hit by Jen Field added to a double and a
walk contributed to the McAuley offense.
One remaining
run was scored by McAuley in the bottom of
the sixth inning as Mcauley would hold off
the Eagles in the top of the seventh for an
11-4 victory. Senior Daphne Politis got
credit for the win for McAuley.
