EAGLE PRIDE: Dawn of a Football Town
Middle
and High School Football
November 7, 2008
By David Field
The
Windham MS Squad held their final practice today
before the SMYFL Championship game on Sunday.
At
3:50pm, the squad jogged up to Field 9 to join the
High School Squad in their pre-game practice. Coach
Perkins let the squad finish the play and called
them in.
When all players had taken a knee, he called to the
sideline and invited the MS squad to join his
squad. He then delivered a speech that was
inspiring. He began by telling the group how proud
he was of them. From the seventh grade squad up to
the High School Varsity Squad, they have a record of
33-11. “What was once a soccer town has now become
a football town! Football is here to stay in the
Town of Windham” he proclaimed.
He
invited the MS squad to attend the Western Maine
Class A semi-final playoff game in Saco. He then
countered and directed his players to attend the
SMYFL Championship game on Sunday to support the MS
squad.
Coach Perkins then asked Coach Coons for his input.
Coach Coons expressed his pleasure in being around
the HS squad. He congratulated them on their hard
work and told them he would be at tomorrow’s game.
“It has truly been a pleasure working with you
guys. I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed
the experience. The way you guys carry yourselves
has reflected on my team and they walk and talk like
you. Whether you guys realize it or not, my guys
look up to you, each and every one of you.”
After Coach Coons was done, Coach Perkins told the
group to “bring it up, helmets up”. Almost 100
kids, seventh graders to seniors in high school,
raised their helmets simultaneously and shouted
“EAGLE PRIDE”.
It
was an inspiring moment and one I shall not forget.
When was the last time you saw an athletic program,
six grades deep get together? Good Luck Windham
Eagle Football this weekend.
