Cumberland - In a game
that was conceived in the halls of the
Portland Police Department, the Eighth Grade
Football Squad continued its win streak by
defeating the Greely 30-0.
Coach Coons has a
co-worker whose son plays for Greely and the
coaches contacted each other to arrange the
game. The Eagles had to make a few
adjustments to the conference rules that
Greely follows such as no rushing a punter
and any defensive blitzing back had to be
off the ball by three feet before
advancing. Even with the adjustments, the
defense was very strong and the offense
still had few problems moving the ball.

fistful away is Damien Shepard (AOW)
from scoring another touchdown. Nicky
Sundquist looks back for a possible block.

To start the game Windham
lost the toss and had to kick to the Colts.
The Colts had an offense the Eagles hadn’t
seen. It was a single wing backfield with
snaps being received by random carriers and
it featured well camouflaged reverses.

On the first offensive
possession, Greely’s penalties cost them and
got them to third and 35 to go. They
attempted to convert on fourth down and were
handily stopped.
Windham’s first snap
yielded a fifteen yard touchdown thanks to
Damien Shepard’s
(AOW)
ball carry.
Colby Waterhouse would convert the two
point PAT.
Greely’s next possession
was a bit more productive, with their number
42 getting big yards on a handful of plays.
The Colts made it to the Windham twenty yard
line before being stopped again.

Windham would take the
ball 80 yards and hand the ball to its “Big
Man”, Tyler Pennanen and he would score from
two yards out. On the PAT, a holding
penalty would push the Eagles back to the
thirteen yard line. Undaunted, Damien
Shepard
(AOW)
would convert despite the distance.
Once again, the Colts
would try to move against the Eagles. After
a few running plays, they went to the air
and Damien Shepard
(AOW)
would intercept and run the ball back 22
yards. This would set up his second
touchdown of the day from eight yards out.
Shawn Franoeur would kick the PAT to
lead the Eagles into half time 23-0.

In the second half, the
Eagles would control the ball for the
majority of the time. The Colts eventually
would force a possession turn over on
downs. Damien Shepard
(AOW)
again came out of the defensive backfield
with an interception and advanced the ball
31 yards to set up a
Christian Coons three yard touchdown.
Shawn Franoeur would kick the PAT.
Greely would try to advance the ball on
their next possession, but with 1:22 left in
the game,
Christian Coons would pounce on a loose
ball in the Colt back field to give the
Eagles the decisive victory.
Catch the Eagles this
Sunday in York as they take on the
SMYFL leading and undefeated team.
