That’s the
name of this past weekend’s soccer festival
in Cumberland and that’s exactly what
happens! Many soccer teams from all around
were part of this great weekend of soccer.
The weather was great, the fields were green
and the kids were having a blast.
Windham has
participated in this Tournament for several
years now and has had a lot of success.
After talking with many coaches about there
experiences with the tournament they all
have said the same thing. “It’s a GREAT way
to kick of the year.” Being a coach myself
I couldn’t agree more.
Windham had
teams from U9 all the way up to U14 boy and
girls. No matter which way you looked there
were games going on. After attending over 14
games this weekend I will tell you that it
wasn’t just the games that was so special
about this weekend. It was the atmosphere!
It was the families hanging out, the kids
cheering on the older and younger teams from
there clubs while chewing down huge pieces
of watermelon. It was the togetherness that
was so special the teams bonding, community
coming together.
Sure we were
all there for the same reason to play or
watch our kids play soccer but really it was
much more than that! I could go on for ever
about the results of the games but it just
isn’t that important!
I saw more
Windham players, parents and families this
weekend supporting each other and cheering
on all teams. I saw teams with tents set up
with tons of food, drinks games going on all
around them. I saw kids running, jumping,
laughing, smiling! I saw people throwing a
football around in between games. I saw kids
playing baseball catch with there dads. I
even saw a dog with a team jersey on showing
support for one of the Windham teams. It
just doesnt get much better than that!
I am proud to
say I was part of this weekend and that I
was able to support and cheer on many
Windham teams while meeting new people from
the town that I live in. I hope all the
teams took the opportunity this weekend to
do the same! It doesnt matter how old you
are, you don’t need to have a reason, you
don’t have to be a player, you don’t have to
be a coach, you don’t have to have kids, You
don’t even need to understand the game of
soccer!
All you need
to do is allow yourself to JUST HAVE FUN!
U9 GIRLS DEBUT AT "JUST FOR FUN" TOURNAMENT
By Robin Mullins
The Windham U9 girls team - "The Angelz"
played their first soccer games against
opponents this weekend. It was also the
first time any of them had played against
players from towns outside of Windham. They
fought through some jitters in the first
game, but held their own the entire day in a
mostly U10 team tournament. The girls had
some great passes, made some impressive
fakes and drives past opponents, and talked
and worked well as a team. In fact, parents
and coaches from other towns commented on
well the girls played. Many were
surprised they were a U9 team. It was fun
day and we all look forward to the rest of
the season.
