Windham A Squad stunned at home by #4 Noble
in Playoffs
October 28,
2007
By David Field
The MS
Windham A Squad was defeated on Sunday
26-13. Aggressive Noble defense and
turnovers were really the base story of this
game.
Windham
lost the toss and Noble quickly got into
position by returning the opening kick off
to the Windham 5 yard line. On the third
play, they put the ball in the end zone.
The 2 point conversion failed. Windham took
possession and on the opening play from
their 41 yard line, Damien Shepard fumbled
and Noble recovered. The Windham defense
did their job.
Windham
took possession at their 17 yard line and
began the offensive move. TD O’Brien put up
a nice pass, but a Noble defender tipped the
ball and #7 Ricky Flowers caught the tip and
scrambled for a bunch of yards. After a
series of plays and the open of the second
quarter, Ricky Flowers scored on a QB keep
to make the score 12-0. The Eagle defense
prevented the two point conversion.
Windham
takes over and again tries moving the ball.
Colby Waterhouse broke outside and appeared
to have a 40 yard gain. Noble #43 ended up
stripping the ball from Waterhouse and
scrambled over 50 yards. The Eagle defense
again answered the call and took control of
the ball. However, #43, made his presence
known again and stripped the ball from the
Eagle running back and scored 6 points on
the turnover. Again, the Eagle defense
stopped the two point conversion.
While the
Noble fans were going crazy, Windham’s kept
the faith. Windham began to show some
offensive fortitude and moved the ball into
the Squire side. TD O’Brien found Jeremy
Peavey on a beautiful pass for a 37 yard
touchdown. Shawn Francoeur kicked the PAT
and Windham’s confidence began to show.
However, on the ensuing kickoff, Noble’s
Ricky Flowers returned the ball to finish
their scoring. On their final attempt, they
were successful converting the two points.
To open the
second half, Windham took control and
Christian Coons rumbled into the end zone on
a one yard carry to finish the Eagle’s
scoring for the day. Eagle highlights
included Colby Waterhouse rushing 13 times
for 118 yards, Jeremy Peavey with three pass
receptions for 59 yards and Tyler Stevens
leading the defense with 8 ½ tackles.
Even though
the Eagle’s season is complete, the season
was a success. As parents and friends we
are especially grateful to Coach Coons and
his assistants for developing this group of
fine young men to compete at such a
successful level. Hopefully, it is an
indication of the future of Windham
Football.
The
Championship Game for the Southern Maine
Youth Football League will be held at
Scarborough HS and will feature defending
champion and #3 seed Scarborough against the
Noble Squires, #4 seed. The game will be
November 4 at 1pm.
B Squad
finishes season on positive note
While this
game may not have been as important, the
game itself was very competitive with the
younger Eagles defeating the Squires 12-8
with less than a minute in the game.
On its
opening possession, Windham scored first on
Josiah Purves’ 60 yard scramble. On the two
point conversion, quarterback Calvin Field
rolled outside looking for an open receiver,
finding none, headed for the end zone and
was stopped short. Noble, not wanting to be
left out, opened the second quarter with its
version of a wide open running game. The
Squires put six points on the board with a
40 yard end zone dash. They additionally
converted the two point conversion to take
an 8-6 lead.
The second
half was balanced attacks on each squad with
periodic punts and not many mistakes on
either team’s part. In the fourth quarter,
Windham has the ball deep in its own end.
The Noble defense has been focused on Josiah
Purves and limited his long gains. With 27
seconds in the game, Josiah took the handoff
from Field and poured the gas on to make the
game 12-8. Josiah finished the day with 20
carries and 176 yards.
With 22
seconds on the clock, Noble was not ready to
get on the bus. They worked from a
no-huddle offense and on their third play,
Eagle Brad Carpentier saved the game by
tackling the running back as time expired on
the 20 yard line after a 30 yard gain. Brad
led the junior Eagle defense with 6 tackles.
The B Squad
looks to next year to resurrect the success
the A Squad delivered this year. We look
forward to this year’s sixth graders joining
the current seventh graders and hope that
they may be able to deliver the SMYFL trophy
to Windham.
