A SQUAD

On an absolutely beautiful October afternoon, the Windham Eagles rolled through their first SMYFL playoff opponent and defeated the Wells Warriors 57-6.

The game started with Wells winning the coin toss and receiving the ball.  Wells showed offensive potential with their unbalanced formations during their first possession.  Windham’s defense relented and took possession on their 38 yard line.  Windham moved the ball well but faced a 4th and one yard challenge on the Warrior’s 36 yard line.  TD O’Brien handed off to Damien Shepard who scrambled past the first down target and all the way to the end zone.  The two point conversion was stopped by the Warriors.

After the kickoff, Wells found themselves deep in their end due to Windham’s strong defense and a penalty.  Wells’ quarterback was in the shotgun and the snap sailed over his head and into the end zone.  The scramble ensued and Windham recorded the safety.

On the kick-off from the 20, Wells was called for being offside and Windham eventually took possession on the Warrior’s 35.  On the first play, Damien Shepard took the hand off on a reverse play all the way to the five yard line.  Two plays later Christian Coons put the ball into the endzone to make the score 14-0.  Colby Waterhouse added 2 points on the PAT.

The Eagles tried a new kicker on the next kick off.  Jordan Lindsay kicked the ball into the end zone and Wells started on their own 20.  Windham’s defense came up big again when Jordan Lindsay recovered a fumble on the 14.  Colby Waterhouse took the handoff and scrambled to add another 6.  Shawn Francoeur kicked the point after to make the score 23-0.

Wells scored their only points on the ensuing kick-off.  Jordan Lindsay again kicked the ball and the Wells kick returner found an opening and took the ball 95 yards to put 6 points on the board for the Warriors.  Windham’s defense foiled the point after conversion, holding onto the 23-6 lead.

Windham took possession again.  The Eagles worked their way to the Warriors 44 yard line.  TD O’Brien threw a beautiful pass to Jeremy Peavey who had two steps on the defense and quickly ate up the field to put another six points on the board.  Shawn Francoeur kicked the point after to make the score 30-6.

Wells’ next two possessions were turned over on downs and Windham converted both to touchdowns.  Colby Waterhouse rambled for a 43-yard touchdown and the point after kick just missed.  Damien Shepard kicked into high gear for a 28-yard carry and Dylan Henry added 2 points on the conversion.  The first half ended with the Eagles up 44-6.

The second half saw some different players in the game and defensively not giving much up.  The highlight reel would show Dylan Henry cutting across the grain on a 4th down and 16 for a 27 yard touchdown.  Later in the game, Dylan Henry intercepted a pass and scrambled down the left side of the field for a 55-yard touchdown.  Shawn Francoeur added the point after kick.

Next week the Eagles will face Noble in the Playoff Semi-finals in Windham.  Noble handily defeated Bonny Eagle to earn their right to play next week.  In regular season play, Windham defeated Noble 30-6.

B SQUAD

The junior Eagles worked hard to be like the A Squad and were successful in defeating the Warriors 26-6.

Windham won the toss but could not convert on its first possession.  Wells took the ball and worked its way down the field and put 6 points on the board on a QB keeper.  The 2 point conversion was denied.  Windham would tie the game on Josiah Purves 60-yard dash later in the quarter.  The PAT was denied by the Warriors.

Windham didn’t waste any time on their next possession putting another six points on the board when Purves again dashed on a 36 yard carry.  The conversion again was foiled. Purves would finish the day with 132 yards rushing.

Later in the game, Calvin Field threw a beautiful 14-yard pass to Owen Kelnhofer in the end zone to notch another 6 points.  However, on the PAT, the pass play did not work for Field and crew.  Jordin Allen would score Windham’s final TD by hauling a few Warriors into the end zone with him.  Nick Sundquist added 2 points on the QB keep.
