On a beautiful
Sunday afternoon with a clear sky and 77 degree
temperature, the Eagles of Windham played near
perfect football. On the drive down to Kittery,
most players and families witnessed the arrival
of the Vietnam Memorial wall and its escort of
motorcyclists.
A
SQUAD
Despite missing a
handful of key players, the Eagles never stopped
playing on either side of the ball in its
convincing victory over the Kittery Sharks
60-12.
Windham won the
toss and elected to receive the ball. On the
second play from scrimmage, Colby Waterhouse
broke outside for a beautiful 48 yard gain for
the touchdown. On the 2 point attempt, TD
O’Brien attempted a pass to Jeremy Peavey that
was just missed. The Eagles held the Sharks and
quickly took control and marched down the
field. TD O’Brien found Peavey in the end zone
to put another 6 on the board. Changing up the
point after strategy, coach Coons had Colby
Waterhouse attempt a kick, however that missed
wide left. The Windham stingy defense held the
Sharks and Windham took over on the Shark’s 48
yard line. On the first play, Damien Shepard
took the reverse hand off all the way to the end
zone. Colby Waterhouse kicked his first point
after of the season to make it Windham 19-0 with
6:34 into the first quarter.
The stunned Sharks
attempted to shake things up. On their second
play, the ball was passed over the middle. Zach
Tolman put his eyes on the ball and intercepted
the pass and ran 40 yards for the touchdown.
Colby Waterhouse booted his second point after
to make the score 26-0. After the Eagle kick
off, the Eagle defense had been shuffled and
forced the Sharks to punt. Quarterback TD
O’Brien was deep for the Eagles and took the
punt 70 yards for another touchdown. Waterhouse
missed his fourth attempt. The first quarter
ended Windham 32, Kittery Sharks 0.
In the second
quarter the Sharks finally got on the board but
were stopped by the hungry Eagles on the point
after attempt. After the kickoff, Windham
shuffled their offense, and eventually Colby
Waterhouse scrambled for a 14 yard touchdown.
He attempted and missed on his fifth point after
kick. After the kickoff, Windham’s Zach Tolman
got his second interception and ran it back 63
yards. The point after failed. Halftime score
was Windham 44, Kittery 6.
In the second
half, it was all Eagle defense except for one
touchdown by the Sharks. Safety Damien Shepard
put his eye on the first of two airborne balls
and took it 63 yards for a touchdown. On the
point after attempt, the Sharks stunned the
Eagles by blocking the kick by Colby
Waterhouse. With the ball laying on the field
and everyone looking around, Zach Tolman grabbed
the ball and ran it in to complete the point
after play for two points. On the second pick,
Damien Shepard ran 83 yards and Christian Coons
converted the point after to seal the Eagle
scoring.
B
SQUAD
The junior squad
took over from where the Varsity squad left off
and defeated the Junior Sharks 28-0.
Windham lost the
toss and the Sharks elected to receive. Windham
looked a little shaky at first; forcing the
Sharks to punt on fourth down and the kicker
bobbled the ball and then ran 20 yards to
convert the first down. On the next set of
downs, Windham held the Sharks and forced the
punt. The Eagles drove down the field and
Josiah Purves scored on a 23 yard run. Josiah
added the two point conversion.
In the second
quarter, Dan Stewart intercepted a Shark pass
and ran 20 yards for the Eagles second
touchdown. Nicky Sundquist added the two point
conversion. Halftime score was Windham 16,
Kittery 0.
On the opening
kick off, Calvin Field took the ball 75 yards to
put the Eagles on the board again. Due to a
face mask penalty, the two point conversion was
declined. In the fourth quarter, Josiah Purves
scored another Eagle touchdown by racing 29
yards. The conversion was foiled by the Shark
defense.
This Sunday, the MS Eagles are at
home on HS Field 9 facing an undefeated Saco
team at 1pm. This will be the big game of the
season. Let’s hope that the young Eagles can
get healthy this week and can produce touchdowns
on an un-scored upon Saco team. |
