8th
Grade Basketball Team Erases Big Deficit To
Defeat Gorham 31-30
Things got
off to a very rocky start for the 8th
grade Eagles in Gorham on Friday afternoon
but they eventually worked out of a big hole
to defeat the Rams. Per SMAA rules,
starting players cannot play in the second
quarter. This forces equal playing time in
the first half of the game. So, at the end
of the first half, the score was Gorham 16,
Windham 4. I am not saying that the SMAA
rules contributed to that deficit. Windham
squandered several opportunities and it is
obvious that this is still early season
play. Coach Fullerton is looking forward to
tightening up this squad.
The squad
of Nolan Allen, Dana King, Mitchell Hodge,
Steve Newcomb and Dakota Cummings generated
some serious offense to start the second
half. Additionally, the game got extremely
physical as frustrations grew on both sides
of the court. At the end of three quarters
the score was 25-21 in Gorham’s favor and
Windham was looking to erase their lead.
So, the
fourth quarter starts. Not many points were
scored, in fact I think more fouls were
committed than points scored. Soren Madison
actually left the game to tend to a nose
bleed. Because both teams were in the bonus
category the game came down to foul shots.
Gorham couldn’t make their shots and Windham
prevailed. With seconds left, Nolan Allen
drives to the hoop and lays in the tie
breaking shot. Going the other way Nolan
commits his fifth foul of the game with 3.7
seconds left and sits down. The Gorham foul
shooter hit one of two to leave them one shy
of the tie. Dana King gets fouled on the
rebound with 1.5 seconds left. He missed
both foul shots and time ran out.
Catch the
Eagles next on Tuesday as they take on the
Bonney Eagle Scots at WMS.
