(Introduction is by Coach Coons)
As a coach
there nothing better then watching a
child grow into a young man and become a
very good athlete, that's the case with
Matt McLean.
I first
coached Matt when he was in 4th grade
and wasn't sure about playing football.
By 5th
grade Matt decided to take a year off
and figure out if he really wanted to
play the game or not.
Well by
6th grade Matt had made his decision and
football was in. Each year Matt has just
improved at the game and has become the
leader of the lineman on the Middle
School team.
Matt
excels on the football field with his
knowledge of the game as well as in the
class room. Matt is the type of player
that makes me a better coach by the
questions he asks because if Matt has
questions about something I just taught
I can be guaranteed that others have the
same question.
So keep
that name in the back of your mind
because you will be hearing that name on
the loud speaker on the HS field very
soon.
WSP:
What
is your favorite sport?
MATT:
I don't really have a favorite sport. It
is basically whatever season it is.
WSP:
When
did you start playing football?
MATT:
Third grade
WSP:
What is your favorite thing about
football?
MATT:
There's something different about
winning in football, and that's one of
my favorite things about it. I also love
the chance to hit and challenge myself.
WSP:
What is your least favorite thing about
football?
MATT:
My least favorite thing about football
would be when I sometimes get
discouraged with all the work and all
the time I put into the sport.
WSP:
Did
you know your team was going to be this
good when the season started?
MATT:
Yes,
I
knew that this was going to be a good
year because of our good record last
year.
WSP:
What
do you think is the biggest reason for
your team's success this season?
MATT:
The way that we seem to just click
together and work towards the goal at
game time.
WSP:
What
advice would you give to the younger
kids coming up through the youth
football program?
MATT:
My biggest advice would be to pay
attention to the things that you are
learning at these younger levels of
play. It will come in handy during the
later years of football. My only other
advice would be to always try your
hardest especially when the coach is
looking.
WSP: What is your favorite activity
outside of sports?
MATT:
I would have to say that there's nothing
more fun than gathering a bunch of
friends and playing a couple games of
two hand touch or wiffle ball.
WSP: What is your favorite subject
in school?
MATT:
My favorite subject in school would
have to be social studies or math.
WSP:
What is
your least favorite subject in school?
MATT:
My least favorite subject in school
is science
WSP:
Do you do
anything outside of practice to prepare
for football?
MATT:
Yes, and it is very important to try and
get outside and get active before
football comes around. I also lift
weights in preparation for football
season. If you don't do anything before
football starts it will most likely hit
you like a brick wall.
WSP: Do you have any pre-game
superstitions?
MATT:
No, I
don't really have any superstitions. The
only thing I do before a game is site
down for 10 or 15 minutes and think
about my jobs for the game.
